Ned Young

November 11, 2011

After my annual mamogram, I went to our own Brigham City's professional artist, Ned Young's, Art Studio for an Open House.  I purchased a calendar for next year, which he signed, as well as a few boxes of Christmas cards. What I love about Ned Young's art - they are pictures of quaint homes, orchards, and day's gone by of our rural community here in Northern Utah.  The featured picture this year is a Victorian house that I have always loved and been intrigued with.  It is located on 4th South and 4th West, a block from our home in Brigham City.  The owners of the home were ward members.  I hope everyone loves my Christmas cards as much as I do!

Indian Schools

November 4, 2011

This is quite hard for me to believe.  But not too many years ago, Native American boys and girls were housed in these Indian Schools in Brigham City.  It was a community within a community. The purpose was to educate them and provide a better life.... hummm! There are a several dozen large complexes of these long, abandoned buildings.

Utah State University is tearing them down right now to make way for a USU Campus.  It will be strange not to see them anymore.

Mail Box 183

November 3, 2011

I pick the mail up once a week... if I remember!  We have always had mail delivered to our house.  Having a box at the post office is not the most convenient thing.

Front Yard Parking Lot

September 13, 2011

It's a good thing that Audrey and Mike moved out of the house in Brigham when they did.  The city is installing a new water line down the middle of 300 West.  The front of our house has become an equipment parking lot and gravel pit, making it somewhat of a challenge to get in and out of the driveway.

Candy!

August 25, 2011

The Box Elder County Fair parade knows how to throw the candy!  Kelsey holds the bag open as Brayden scrambles to gather up as many pieces of candy as he can.

I don't know what happened to the Parades.... today we watch truck after truck pass by with advertisements attached to them, and pretty girls throwing candy at you.  Or they walk down the street giving you a flyer advertising their business, and you end up with a stack of them to go home with.  Not a single band; not a single float.  Where, or where, did the good old days go... when a parade was REALLY a parade?

Re-building Taco Time

I've missed Brigham City's Taco Time!  It burned down last year, leaving only the outside walls.  They were tearing the last of it down today and are getting ready to re-build.  Can't wait to eat at one of my favorite spots!

Change is Coming

Saying farewell to the Brigham City 2nd Ward today was not easy.  We have been here for 16 years (minus my run-aways to Price).  I have come to love the people in my ward.  When Dave asked me this morning if I were sad about leaving, of course I said yes.  That triggered a rain shower from my eyes and the rest of the day was history.  I cried off and on throughout the day.  I know I am only a few miles away, but when you change wards and stakes, it's like being a million miles away.  I hugged a lot of people today!

Change is not always easy.  It starts a new chapter in your life.  It can be challenging, adventurous, fun, exciting, intimidating, even frightening.  Next week we will go to a new ward in a new town.  We'll see where the next 16 years takes us!

Joyful Work

I took advantage of the time today while my van was getting inspected. I walked a block and took this picture? Take a guess of what it is before scrolling below the picture.

If you guessed the Brigham City Temple. You are right! Even amid the noise of building, standing at the site and watching the House of the Lord go up, brings me a spirit of peace, reverence and gratitude. It is located in the heart of Brigham City. What once was the site of Central Elementary (where the kids attended school), is now a peaceful and hallowed site. It's still hard to believe we are going to have a temple in our community. I can hardly wait!

One day I was standing at the deli counter at Smiths. A man who looked like he was in his 30's, dressed in work clothes, was standing next to me. We exchanged greetings and then he excitedly told me he was working on the Temple and what a blessing it was for him. This was his second Temple to work on. Joy was bursting out all over. I was thankful for that experience.

Day 57 - REAL Salt Lake Trophy

feb 26
Our own REAL Salt Lake Soccer Team won the National Title last year. It is making the rounds through the state and came to our home town for a few hours. We jumped on the opportunity to see it in person. Very big! Very heavy! And very worth seeing!

Day 56 - Final Rocket Booster Test at ATK

feb 25

Today was the end of an era for the space program in Northern Utah. It was historical. It was sad. It was exciting! Eldest daughter, grandkids, the Mr. and I started out to Thiokol to witness the final rocket booster test. We had to go only 20 miles west of Bear River and left in plenty of time, so we thought! Everyone else had the same idea! Three miles from the testing site, we ran into a dead stop.... we could see only a long line of cars in front of us for miles. We crept only a mile more before the launch took place.

We were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the massive grayish-white smoke rising from the test site. The rumble of the rocket booster blast was very loud... like a freight train, and the ground shook violently... like an earthquake. It was quite an experience!

On the way back, it started raining on us.... or so we thought! Kelsey turned on the windshield wipers. Grayish-black streaks stretched across the windshield with each wipe of the blade. It couldn't be, but it was.... residue from the rocket booster blast! Just like a volcano had erupted, just on a much smaller scale.

On a side note -- closing (or downsizing, which ever way you want to look at it) has adversely affected so many of our neighbors and friends in the community. Lost jobs, uncertainty in the future. It is sad to see the space program go. Seems like this is just another one of Obama's bad decisions.
