Rehabilitation and Comfort

Monday, July 18, 2011

PARKDALE, a nursing home in Price, is mom's new home for the next 100 days while she undergoes rehabilitation on her leg.  Although this is a good thing for mom, it breaks my heart to see her here.  It was her most dreaded and feared thing on earth.  She said she would never, ever go to a nursing home!

When I first saw mom in the nursing home, it was a shock to me.  She fit right in with the old folks.  Even though her mind is good, her body is weak and sick.  She is worse off than many of the residents here.  I want to hope for the best, but reality speaks differently.  I don't think she will ever go home again.  I cry every time I think about it.

Physical therapy is a challenge.  I sat with her for two days and watched mom struggle with the exercises. She stood up to a bar for the first time since the surgery, lasting only a few seconds. It hurts every time she moves her legs. She is trying, but it's so much.

Doctor Potter says mom will never walk again.  She will be confined to a bed and wheelchair for the rest of her life.  She is retaining water around her heart and lungs, which is a dangerous thing.  It is associated with her congestive heart failure.  She has pneumonia.  Her blood sugar has bottomed out.  She has jerking movements in her arms and legs. She is so tired.  The main objective, now, is to keep mom as comfortable as possible for the remainder of her life.  I worry so much about her, but know I have to keep a positive face and attitude when I see her. She deserves my very best.  Love you mom.
