Woodside

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Amie and I spent almost the entire day decorating graves.  First.... Emery, then Woodside, and finally Green River.  I was shocked to see almost half of the town of Emery's graves as infants and small children.  Made me wonder why?  The years were late 1800's, early and mid 1900's.  It was rather eerie.

Woodside, a small abandoned Ghost Town on Hwy 6, in between Wellington and Green River was our next stop.  We had to go through a gravel pit behind the town to find it.  The graveyard was surrounded by an old wood fence (what was left of it).  Each family plot had it's own fenced in plot within the graveyard.  The graves were in dirt and weeds, heaped up in mounds, and usually only a wood marker was at the head and foot of each grave.  No names!

We met the nicest people in Green River.  JoAnne, our host, gave us a brief history on the old and new cemeteries.  Lots of volunteers, from child to senior citizen, showed up to place flowers on the graves.  The Desert Cemetery was full of color and interesting stories.

We had to make a mad dash back to Castle Dale to make it to Dakota's graduation.  I was an hour late.... but it was perfect.  I missed all the boring talks!  Congratulations Dakota on a job well done!

Congratulations Dakota! I love cemeteries, thanks to grandpa. I love to hear the stories. The early 1800's is when the flu epidemic was. I assume the rest has to do with childhood illness.
